The best approach to locate a good deal on a car rental is to call around, don't hesitate to ask about discounts. Alamo and Budget seems to have the largest fleets of cars on Kauai so usually their prices are the best but every so often a company will stage a short term promotion. Sometimes the local Lihue number will give you a better short term promotional deal. Book early and keep the reservation number safe (and not in your checked in bags, since bags can get delayed). In popular times of the year every car rental company on Kauai is "out of cars".Car Rental Guides
The quoted rates seem to come with all manner of add on charges that seem designed to confuse. The Hawaii tourist tax ("highway revenue surcharge") of $2.00 a day is unavoidable. Insurance coverage through your own home policy, or agent, should be checked carefully before you leave home. You will need to be confident when the auto rental sales agent (probably on commission), suggests to you that: "if you rely on your own insurance policy and after an accident you have any trouble getting immediate payment from your home insurance company the Hawaii car rental company will stop you from leaving the island!!!!!"Or they may say " remember Hawaii is a no fault state". Make of all this what you will ..what exactly the implications are of relying on your home insurance policy in a no fault state I really don’t know. Gold Credit cards also frequently have some insurance coverage if you charge a car rental but as a precaution check the small print.
Charges for a second driver can run an extra $25, or $4. A day. How this is enforced I have never understood, (but check on your own insurance policy for coverage) and this charge is sometimes waived if the second driver is a spouse or am employee of the renter …. so if you are not married employ your traveling companion!
You should be able to line up a four door compact for between $135 and $155 a week out of the Lihue Airport... Make a deal then ask if they give a discount of you are a member of the triple AAA. If so join AAA if you are not already a member!
Car rental agencies offer varied discounts to various groups e.g. if you can show membership (or maybe just say you are a member?), in the Price Costco Warehouse Stores they suggest you should call and quote:
